Jim's Birthday Cupcakes

It was Jim's birthday on Saturday. Yes, we both had birthdays this past week. Two Scorpios in one office. Seems like that would be a recipe for disaster but it's worked out great!

Of course we needed to celebrate and so I baked cupcakes that we shared with our voiceover class. The only thing missing was a nice cold glass of milk!

Try these when you are craving something rich and chocolately. Topped with thick cream cheese frosting, it doesn't get any better!
[...]

Turning 50

I ran into someone the other day that I hadn't seen in a few years and the first thing she said to me was: "You look great for someone your age". I realize that she meant that to be a compliment but what she told me was that she thought I was old. Thanks a lot!

Ready or not, this week I turn 50. But haven't you heard? 50 is the new 30! Just look at Sharon Stone. Madonna. Both of them have joined the Still Fabulous at 50 Club. And now they're giving me [...]

A Recipe Worth Sharing

At our last voiceover workshop I brought a loaf of homemade pumpkin bread to share with the class. My son Rob has loved this fragrant pumpkin bread since he was a small boy and now at age 25 he still enjoys it......so much so that he can consume an entire loaf by himself in one day.

It's moist texture and delicate cinnamon flavor makes it highly addictive. I tell my friends I make it because it makes my house smell good....which is true, but I love eating it, too and really, [...]

My Cat Wilma

I love cats. Always have. There is even a chance that one day I could become an eccentric old lady who "collects" them. Hopefully not. But, it is a possibility. Which scares my husband Jeff. Who isn't a cat person.

Our current feline is Wilma and she has been with us for almost 10 years ......a gray fluffball who we consider our "baby". She's somewhat cranky, set in her ways and for some reason, will NOT let us hold her. We can pet her (actually she [...]

The Fortune Cookie

My husband Jeff and I live in the boondocks......30 miles north of Sacramento, at the base of the world's smallest mountain range: the Sutter Buttes. Nothing is close except a pack of coyotes that we hear nightly. So when we learned that a new Chinese restaurant was opening in Wheatland (population 2300) we were excited to try it out.

The won ton soup and Kung Pao chicken were excellent. And, the fortune cookies had real fortunes.....not mini lectures or vague promises, like s [...]

How to Start a Career in Voiceovers

A recent radio interview on Newstalk 1530 KFBK radio about my career in voiceovers has generated a lot of calls at the office and the one question everyone asks is:

"How do I get started in the voiceover business for myself?"

We're glad that you asked us! My business partner and audio engineer extraordinaire Jim would probably tell you that I have earned a black belt in voiceovers since I've been doing them for over 29 years now. And yes, I learned how to do vo [...]

My Radio Interview on Voiceovers

My love affair with the microphone started in 1979 when I was hired to work as an on-air radio"talent" at KKAA Radio in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Though I was less-than-great when I started, I knew that being behind the mic was the only place for me.

Fast forward 18 quick years and I can say that I had a wonderful, always entertaining career in radio. I had worked in the midwest at various radio stations in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa and then drove 1500 miles to Sacram [...]

Too Hot to Swim

If you read my blog entry from May 11th, "Our Pool is Cool" you already know where I'm heading with this:

It's 105 degrees in Sacramento and it's too hot to swim. Our pool temp, which I've been obsessed with for the past 4 months, has now hit an all-time high of 90 degrees.

Jeff and I were going to take a dip this afternoon to "refresh ourselves". But there is nothing refreshing about 90 degree water on a 105 degree day.

Wha [...]

Our Pool is Cool

Last October my husband Jeff and I decided to bite the bullet and put in the pool we've always wanted. Living in the Sacramento, California region means that a pool is almost mandatory for survivial. This is one blazin' HOT area. A comfortable day in July is 95 degrees. We don't even consider it hot until it reaches 105.

The hole was dug in November and it was an interesting process to watch. By mid-January our dream pool, with a flagstone wall and neato water featu [...]

Anyone who works in the voiceover business is familiar with emergencies. Actually, I don’t know if I’ve ever done a voiceover that wasn’t an emergency.

Late nights, early mornings, weekends and even holidays, you’ll find me in my studio working on emergency voiceovers. Phone prompts, radio spots, narration, are all needed PRONTO. Sooner than later.
Confessions from a Great Voice

It started when I was a teenager. People would comment on what a great voice I had. My involvement in theater during high school seemed to spur a lot of the compliments. Teachers, friends, family and complete strangers would make a point of telling me, “wow, you really have a great voice”. I even got compliments when I answered the phone at home. After a while I began to think that I should probably do something with my “great voice”.
 <p [...]

The American Idol Connection

The question always comes up.

“How difficult is it to start a career in voiceovers?”

I listen to their stories when they call my office asking for voiceover guidance. A pleasant-sounding man is anxious to get out of the corporate rat race and thinks being a voiceover talent would be a nice way to earn a living. Another person has been told a thousand times what a great she has and now believes she's heard enou [...]

The Great Flu of 2008

Back in November of 2007 my husband Jeff and I decided that it would be wise to get flu shots. Since we're both self-employed taking sick days means no pay days so we really cannot afford to get sick. So we drove down to our local Longs Drugs in Marysville and got poked all in the name of preventative healthcare.

Or, so I thought.

Last week I came down with the nastiest flu I've had in years. I won't gross you out with the details but it was BAD. So bad that when [...]

This is it! Welcome to my Blog. As a child of the 70's all of this "blog-stuff" is somewhat overwhelming to me. Heck, even the word "blog" is strange. But, from exploring others blogs I discovered they are a good way to share info and experiences and my goal is to write about the wonderful world of voiceovers.

That's the plan, anyway.......to talk about voiceovers. And goodness knows after 25 years behind 100's of microphones I do have a thing or [...]
